			ENVR 30: Fall 2009 

1a. Find out where we get our water in San Diego. 
1b. Find out how much water we use in San Diego County, and San Diego city.
(convert whatever units you find into gallons per day.)
(you can do this by typing into Google, e.g. type "100 acre feet into 
gallons")
If you can break it down into agriculture, houses, etc. that is great.
See if you can find out whether our water use in San Diego is growing or 
shrinking over the past few years and why.

2. Nuclear waste must be stored safely for thousands of years because 
a. Plutonium has a half-life of 24,000 years 
b. Plutonium can be used in bombs and must be kept secure from nuclear theft
c. Uranium is highly radioactive
d. Americium and other highly radioative elements are contained in the waste
e. All of the above

3. Find an article on line about nuclear power.  Is it positive or negative?
Analyze it and see whether it leaves anything out.  List the things that weren't
discussed that should have been.

4. Nebraska, Kansas and parts of Texas get much of their water from
a. The Colorado river
b. Local rain water
c. The Ogallala aquifer
d. Canals from the Mississippi/Missouri River
e. None of the above

5. List several positive things and several negative things about desalination
as a solution to the world's upcoming water shortage.

6. Read about the new water law passed by the California legislature this month
 (It is called the 2009 Comprehensive Water Package)
Analyze it; listing positive and negative things about it, and any concerns
you have.
In light of what you learned in the book (Chap 9) and in class,
what do you think of this legislation?

7. Is ground water a renewable resource or not?  Explain.

8. Which takes more water?  
a. Producing enough aluminum for 20 coke cans?   (which weigh 1/28 pound each)
b. Growing enough wheat to make 10 pounds of flour?
c. producing 1 pound of all beef hamburger?
